Corona onder controle, moeten we dat wel willen?

Eerder schreef ik een stuk over hoe de Corona-crisis onze behoefte aan grenzen blootlegde. Grenzen die nu door Mark Rutte gezet werden vanwege Corona. In een gesprek met een vriendin laatst ontdekte ik nóg een behoefte die pijnlijk wordt blootgelegd door de Corona-crisis: de behoefte aan controle.

Wekenlang keken we naar persconferenties waarbij op de achtergrond de tekst ‘alleen samen krijgen we het virus onder controle’ prijkte. Toen we ons eenmaal weer op de weg waagden, schenen de neonletters van de matrixborden ons diezelfde boodschap toe. ‘Onder controle’.

Want dat willen we graag met zijn allen: het onder controle hebben, de controle hebben en ‘in control’ [eng] zijn. Een illusie natuurlijk, zeker wat betreft een infectieziekte als Corona. Het gaat rond, maakt de ene persoon doodziek terwijl de ander er nauwelijks last van heeft. Het maakt elk kuchje, snufje, niesje en keel- of hoofdpijntje verdacht. Het is wel of niet of misschien een beetje besmettelijk onder kinderen. We lopen op ons tenen op 1,5 meter om elkaar heen, want tja, het kan zomaar weer een uitslaande brand worden. En die hebben we dan niet onder controle.  

Ik weet niet hoe het met jou zit, maar ‘controle’ is nou niet het woord dat mijn gevoelstoestand van de afgelopen maanden beschrijft. Overgeleverd aan de experts van het OMT, Rutte en de Jonge. Angstig voor de storm die mij en mijn dierbaren zou kunnen treffen. Bezorgd wanneer iemand thuis een mogelijk symptoom vertoont. Mijn eerste reactie was om thuis een strak dagschema in te voeren en een dito boodschappenregime. Een poging om controle terug te krijgen.

En nu we weer meer eropuit mogen, wordt het zo mogelijk nog ingewikkelder. Want wat heb je onder controle als je de deur uitstapt? Als je je mengt onder de mensen? Hoe dichtbij laat je mensen komen? Kun je voorkomen dat iemand ‘te dichtbij’ komt? Houdt iedereen zich aan de richtlijnen? Blijven ze met klachten thuis? Wat doe je zelf met dat keelpijntje dat al maanden komt en gaat? Een ritje naar de test-straat met een negatieve uitkomst zegt je alleen dat je het niet had op het moment dat dat staafje in je neus geschoven werd. Daarna mag Joost het weer weten.

Dus, controle? Nee, allerminst. En dat voelt ongemakkelijk, merk ik ook om me heen. We raken er van in de stress. En dat heeft een negatieve invloed op onze weerstand, iets wat we nu meer dan ooit nodig hebben. Dus, wat doen we ermee? Protesteren tegen de maatregelen om zo tenminste weer (meer) controle over ons eigen handelen te krijgen? Elkaar controleren op het naleven van de maatregelen en elkaar berispen in geval van een overtreding? Of is het tijd om onze behoefte aan controle onder ogen te zien, te benoemen voor wat het is, onderzoeken waar die behoefte bij jou vandaan komt en.. heel misschien.. jezelf toestaan om controle wat los te gaan laten?
